Hōmeishu Brewery Tour
A herbal liqueur, “Hōmeishu” is a mirin-based drink with a history that can be traced over 360 years back to the Edo period. This Japanese liqueur is made by soaking herbs such as cinnamon bark and liquorice in mirin wine. This tour will take you around the main brewery of Okamoto Kametarō Honten, one of only four breweries currently in Tomonoura.
The sweet and mellow taste combined with the fragrant and refreshing aroma of the herbs were treasured as an important product of the former Fukuyama Domain, and it was actually served when Commodore Matthew Perry came to Japan. To create this historical liqueur, good quality mirin is absolutely essential. The Okamoto Kametarō Honten brewery considers the brewing of the base alcohol, known as honmirin, the most important step when making Hōmeishu. The brewery has a long history, and they inherited the sign and tools from the Nakamura family, the original brewers of Hōmeishu.
On the “Hōmeishu Brewery Tour”, you will have the chance to learn about the history of this drink while observing the brewing process. You will also be able to take part in a tasting session and compare the flavours of each of the products.
This tour can also be combined with the popular Tomosanpo Walking Tour, where you will be able to meet the locals and learn about the history and culture of the town.
