Blacksmithing Experience

“Sangyo corppration” is an ironworks complex sitting on the doorstep of Tomonoura that specialises in manufacturing custom-ordered metal fittings using state-of-the-art precision processing technology. While the ironworks were established to produce ship tools in 1951, they are working to pass on the traditional forging techniques known as “free forging”.
The foundations of anchor making, free forging refers to the technique of heating up the metal and applying pressure by striking it with the hammer to strengthen the metal while shaping it. The room numbers and room keys at NIPPONIA TOMO MINATOMACHI were all forged using this technique.
During this forging experience, you will be able to experience first-hand the traditional blacksmithing culture of Tomo. Not only will you be able to observe from close quarters the red-hot metal be heated over 1,000 degrees, but you will also be able to create, under the watchful eye of the masters, your own original iron tray, incense holder or pan to take home.
